In Mogarraz, one of the villages where Popular Embroidery has remained active, we felt the need to showcase all of the women who have had a hand in creating these artworks and kept their craft alive. The Embroiderers’ Route that leads us through several streets in the centre of Mogarraz starts here.
In order to show the unique designs and icons of Serrano embroidery in an outdoor setting, we have replaced the climate-sensitive needles, cloths and threads with iron, rope, limestone and plastic. These specially crafted materials allow us to bring the role of women embroiderers to the forefront. These female artisans have remained in the shadows, unseen and undervalued, for centuries. The Embroiderers’ Route takes you on a beautiful walk down narrow lanes, up steep streets, around cozy plazas and past bubbling fountains. The route flows through Mogarraz like a needle pulling its colorful threads through a cloth being embroidered.
